God's Wisdom for Little Boys

Caleb has such a love of books that I thought every once in awhile I'd do a little review of some of our favorites. Now that he's become much more mobile he's not as thrilled about sitting with me and reading books when he could be cruising around furniture or crawling all over the place, but we still read before naptime and bedtime.

One of our favorites is God's Wisdom for Little Boys (I believe there is also a God's Wisdom for Little Girls, but I haven't read that one).

God's Wisdom for Little Boys is a book full of beautiful pictures and little rhymes paraphrasing many of the proverbs found in the Book of Proverbs.

It would probably be more appropriate for an older child, so Caleb and I only read a few pages at a time, but he loves the pictures and the rhyming words.

I love this book because of the scriptural truths that is teaches. It teaches about obedience, kindness, and giving, to name a few. It teaches how God wants his children to act, and how happy it makes Him when we do.

I'm slightly upset because this is when Caleb tore one of the pages ... perhaps I should have been paying better attention to him instead of snapping pictures.

Anyways, this book is great and teaches some really great lessons.

Books

I love books.

And I really want Caleb to love books, as well. And so far, he does.

We (actually, I is more appropriate here, but I'll say we anyways), we have been reading to Caleb since he was a few weeks old. At first, he didn't pay a bit of attention to the books. He just listened, and perhaps enjoyed the sound of our voices. But by a few months old, he actually started noticing the pictures, and began to make the connection between what he was hearing and what he was seeing.

Now, I'm not saying that he somehow knows we are reading stories to him from the pages of the books he is looking at, but he knows there is some connection between the animated, often rhyming, words he is hearing and the books in front of him. And he loves it.

Now at almost 8 months old (hard to believe isn't it), he is a wiggly little man. Always on the move. But if I sit with him in our rocking chair and pull out a book, he becomes calm, and sits quietly as I read to him. He is engrossed in the pages of his books, and will often sit and listen to 2, or 3, or 4 books before getting squirmy again.

He even protests if I try to put him to bed without reading a bedtime story first. Sometimes it's late, and I know he's tired so I attempt to skip the story and go straight to the few minutes of rocking we do before I lay him in his crib. But he will have none of it. He looks longingly at his bedtime books on the nightstand, reaches for them, and fusses until I give in, pick the shortest book he has and read it to him. The boy wants his bedtime story, and I love it. Love that he wants to read books, love that we share a common interest (you can't always say that about an 8 month old) and love that he loves his books.

He even has his favorites : Goodnight Moon(a classic) and Cuddle For Little Duck(about a little duck and his mommy, and their day of adventures).

I have my favorites too, the most recent of which is, You Are My I Love You Such a sweet book.

Caleb has a few books that I picked up simply because I vividly remember reading them as a child, and wanted him to enjoy them the same way I did. As Caleb grows older and his life begins to fill with school, sports, friends, toys, and hunting (if Charles has any say in it), I hope his love of books continues because books are something you can enjoy for a lifetime.

A little book review

If you know me at all, you know that I love to read. I'm hoping that this is something I can pass on to my little man. He already enjoys reading books, or chewing on them, whatever. But we have been reading to him since he was born, and he truly does enjoy listening and looking at the pictures.

Caleb has several Bible story books, all of which will get plenty of use. But I was having a hard time finding one that we could begin using now. I needed lots of pictures, to keep his attention, and few words. Most Bible story books are really geared for toddlers and up, so they are a little more wordy than Caleb can handle at this point, but I wanted to begin reading these wonderful stories with Caleb now.

We now have exactly what I wanted. "Pops" and "Honey" (Charles' parents) got Caleb a series of Bible story books for his baptism that are perfect. Charles loved these books as a child, and I have a feeling Caleb will love them just as much. He already loves looking at the big colorful pictures.

Read-Aloud Bible Stories by Ella K. Lindvall comes in 4 volumes and each book contains 5 classic stories from the Bible. They are short enough to be read in a few minutes, and the pictures are big and bright, perfect for keeping the attention of even the most energetic child. I'm hoping to read from these books regularly and use them to help Caleb hide God's word in his heart.
